Turnning Bowls

Have you ever walked through the woods on a fall day when the leaves crunch under your feet and more drift down from the tree tops; orange, yellow and reds, as you walk the colors change, the sun shines through the leaves leaving a bright peaceful hue. Golden rays shine between the colorful leaves creating a quiet, peaceful environment. As incredibly gorgeous as that is there is yet another beauty that lies within, under the surface of those amazing trees lies intricate patterns and colors most don’t get to enjoy. I’ve always had a love for what’s under the surface, what has God created that we can’t see unless we dig deeper. Things are so beautiful on the outside, things that all of us can see but yet there is something hidden that you can’t see until you dig deeper.

When I go out to collect more wood to turn bowls it always excites me not knowing what I will find till I’ve cut into that wood and every piece has got such amazing designs and that’s only the beginning, from there the logs come into the shop where I cut them into bowl blanks and get to see even more amazing patterns but it doesn’t stop there, from there I mark the center and mount it on the lathe not yet knowing what shape the final piece will be. Not knowing what the final piece will look like makes them all so unique, it’s one of the things that sets them apart from the wooden bowls you get on Amazon. The colors, the patterns, the designs, all different in every single bowl, all pointing to the one that created the trees that they came from. After turning the bowl I sand it smooth, finish the foot and apply the finish that makes it pop. Beautiful, just beautiful, every piece in its own way. In the same way as there is a hidden beauty in the trees that surround us there is also a hidden beauty within each and every one of us, we must just “dig deeper” to find it.

“Your beauty should not come from outward adornments, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”
1 Peter 3:3–4
